the seventh modal analysis release comes from athenian producer and dj, anfs. following his remix for kondaktors signal 1, anfs returns to the label with his debut release, ground, a four track ep which consists of original material. borrowing sounds from early twentieth century folk greek culture, the ep is dominated by a rhythmic canibalistic spirit and a noisy distorted cue. ground 1 functions as an introduction, or rather ones initiation to the mystic rituals that prevail. the artist uses drones and distorted textures which increase in ground 2 and are backed up by drums that beat in a hard-and-slow ethnic tonality. ground 3 reveals a paroxysm of emotions which comes as a result from the combination of basslines and vocals that create a complex and twisted vortex. the trip ends with ground 4, a more stripped down monotonic ensemble that serves as an epilogue and a catharsis.

kenny dope and louie vegas nu-yorican soul project was responsible for some of the biggest underground club hits to come out of nyc throughout the 1990s, their collective vast musical knowledge, impeccable taste and legendary status as djs in the city only helped elevate them to the highest level.
the nervous track is a fine example of the duos deep musical heritage, originally released on nervous records in 1993 its deep pads, bassline and solid as a rock breakbeats captured the ears and minds of any self respecting dj or dancer who came within a hundred miles of it, the very definition of a classic! fusing the worlds of jazz, latin, hiphop and house maw set the blueprint for generations of djs and producers to come with records like this.
here, re-mastered and re-issued from the original dats in conjunction with nervous records nyc is a piece of dance music history, the nervous track is available again and still sounding as vital and groundbreaking as it did on its original release.

one of las smartest young voices says the la times…which the artist suspects, may just be a covert way of saying la is dumb. “open” mike eagle wouldnt terribly mind, being born and raised in chicago where the painful winters and his uppity grandparents kept him inside as a youth. he spent his formative years watching alternative music happen on mtv and hoping to one day be able to audition for the native tongues. as a young adult after graduating with a degree in psychology, he did the next best thing and moved to los angeles, joining the project blowed collective where he made music and toured with busdriver, aceyalone, abstract, nocando, and more. he has also gained notoriety in the world of comedy by being invited by professional funny people (paul f. tompkins, hannibal buress, matt besser/ucb) to rap at their shows. he would like to be raps kurt vonnegut but recognizes that he would first have to create something as iconic as the four-stroke illustration of an anus. he practices by releasing rap albums that delight, entertain, and confuse.

liverpool-based producer bantam lions has long been part of the scenery records family, helping label boss asok launch the imprint with 2012s one to one ep. here he returns with his third 12 inch for the label. lead cut *recollections* is particularly good, delivering a deep and attractive fusion of fuzzy analogue warm, dreamy melodies and intoxicating chords. he ups the tempo further on *many years later*. which layers dubbed-out chords and swirling textures over an energy-packed techno groove. the accompanying remixes are pretty tasty, too, with the cyclist particularly impressing with his detroit techno-goes-lo-fi interpretation of *recollections*. that said, the dreamy, new age-influenced downtempo take from mood hut regular cloudface is pretty darn good, too.

black rox is back with 2 more sneaky soft rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked cd wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. the a side sabu dance combines horns, flutes & percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from africa via berlin. this has been thoroughly road tested by soft rocks at their kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. side b. don t worry it s not the tantric one s ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of uk. reggae at is s finest. adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. a perfect track for blissful summer evenings (yeah whatever!).
we hope you will permit us the indulgence of deviating slightly from our globe trotting explorations on this release as we pay homage to the sun. highlife on holiday, if you will. stepping away from the edits, auntie flo delivers a new original track. sun ritual ii takes things up a notch from its earlier counterpart (released on kompakt), banging dare-we-say-it berghain techno gives way to warm synth-laden euphoria. on the flip, miajica, one third of alma negra who you may recall from highlife2. here he serves up a delightfully familiar summer treat, the original being an end of the night, highlife highlight, particularly at our annual tribute to the sun event. we are sure you will agree that both sides are rock solid and primed for the summer!
